How to create a new folder and move items into it

In this section I will be showing you how to create a new folder and move items into it. Do you have a lot of items on your desktop? Have you installed a lot of games or programs on your computer and each one has left an icon on your desktop that you can click to launch it? Is your desktop becoming too cluttered? Has your OCD just hit it’s breaking point? Or have your friends just mentioned how cluttered your desktop is and you got slightly embarrassed? Well I am here to help you out!

In this guide I will be showing you how to create a folder on your desktop, naming it, and moving items into it.

For the first step you will need to right click on your desktop on a spot that does not have any icons on it. A window will pop up and it will look like this.

You now want to hover your pointer over the word new. A window will pop out and you will need to move your mouse pointer over to the new window. Without clicking on anything yet. To the word that says folder and left click on that. It should look like this.

A new folder should appear on your desktop. It will be called New Folder, but it will look different, the name will be highlighted in blue. That is ok it is waiting for you to type something to change the name of the folder. It should look like this.

Just start typing to change the name of the folder. Once done, just click anywhere else on the screen. If you make a mistake or spelling error. Do not worry! You do not have to start over. I will show you how to change it later. If you did name it correctly, it should look like this.

Of course I named my created folder, but you could name it anything you want! Now if you did make a mistake in naming it. You can go back and right click on the folder and the pop up window from before should appear again. But this time with a lot more options. It should look like this.

At the bottom, I added an arrow so you can see where rename is. Left click that and the text on your folder should go blue again. Just start typing to rename it what you want it to say. Then just click anywhere else on the screen to finalise what you typed. Congratulations now open the folder you just created and named!!

Now with the new folder open let’s start moving things into the folder, just put your mouse pointer over the item you want to move. Press and hold the left mouse button, and while holding down the left mouse button, move your mouse. You will see that a transparent, or see through version of what you had your pointer on is following your pointer.

That is Windows way of helping you see what you are doing. Just move the see through or transparent icon over to the folder and created and left open. Once it is in the folder, let go of the left mouse button. A small window will pop up either briefly or for a bit longer to show how long it will take. As music and pictures might take longer. Where as just an icon should just be less that a second.

And there you have it! I hope this helps you as much as it has helped me. I tend to keep my games in one folder, the same goes for my media, and my security tools like my antivirus! That way my desktop is clear and I know where to find what I need at any given time!
